here’s a thought: the reason why adult/minor friendships are looked upon with suspicion, and the reason why adults with minor friends are accused of being predatory or having bad intentions, is because we think that minors don’t have anything of value to offer adults that isn’t sex/a relationship. it’s a continuation of the way adults devalue minors and their perspectives and contributions to the world.

op is absolutely right. this is coming from someone who researches and teaches on age and society professionally. modern western society is age-segregated to an unprecedented degree and there is ample evidence that it is absolutely fucking us over. it’s linked to everything from economic hardship to mental health crises.

intergenerational friendships are important. adults who never interact with young people outside of a defined institutional relationship with a built-in power imbalance (like being a parent or teacher) don’t develop the capacity to treat young people as equals, which reinforces patterns of abuse, neglect, social disempowerment, and silencing. young people who lack meaningful connections with adults outside of those same institutions miss out on an incredible source of support and guidance. and everyone misses out on the basic human joy of friendships that could have been really meaningful if we didn’t have this weird, broken ideology that says young people have nothing interesting to say, and no value to adults who don’t either want to raise them or exploit them or both.

Like maybe you’re 16 and working your first job, and you have an old Chinese man as a regular who sits at a table and reads the Chinese newspaper his family mails him, and you start sitting down and talking to him when it’s slow. And he tells you all about the life he’s lived, of being a child in the aftermath of world war two. And he talks to you about the prejudice he’s seen, and the way he sees people treat each other, and how much things have changed. And you learn a lot.

Or you meet a 30-something mother of two that walks with a cane in a group therapy session, and when you speak to her she opens up about her struggles with drugs, and how she wishes to stay better so she can be there for her kids. And she teaches you about having a more open mind when it comes to religious beliefs when you’re an edgy atheist teen.

Or you’re very isolated in your hobbies, and you meet a group of college students that share your interests and are fine letting you join in on their card games and D&D, and you not only learn the games but you get used to a group that’s accepting and just wants to have fun and make everyone comfy, and you learn not every group of people has to be judgemental and scary.

You’re saying that instead of making teens aware of the signs of toxic relationships, and keeping an open line of communication so we can help them take notice of and avoid these things… You’d rather we lock teens in a box where they’re deprived of the positives?

Force so many teens to be around peers that bully and disregard them, when they have prospective friends in local clubs and support groups that just aren’t necessarily in their peer group?

Hardcore Tumblr users really are just puritans huh? Hell even historically, households were made of many generations, and kids helped out in the community and met the adults that kept it going.

Back in college, one of my friends brought her 12 year old sister over to the dorm when her family was in town.  For one night, the whole crew instantly adopted her and went out to a playground at 11 PM and had a blast hanging out together.  She gave some solid relationship advice to one of the older members of the friend group (who was, in fact 30 at the time!  My “college” friends included people >10 years older than the frosh), telling this woman more than twice her age that really, she needed to break up with her toxic boyfriend.

Years later we still get updates on her life, and a bunch of those people went to see her perform on stage six years later when she got the lead role in her college(!!!) production of She Kills Monsters.

Do you know how easy it is for a bunch of 18 to 30 year olds to hang out with a middle schooler and have it be a healthy, fun, and positive experience for everybody involved?  Super easy! it turns out that kids are actual people with whole sentient brains and everything.  Just be respectful and nice!

When I was in my early teens, I’d sit on the curb next to a man in his 90′s named Oswin, who would sit by the road in his wheelchair all day and wave to the cars. He told me all sorts of stories about his life (sometimes more than once, which helped me remember them). I wrote part of one into my novel.

I got really close to an adult volunteer with a queer youth group in high school, and she took me in like an odd, overenthusiastic niece. I did have a crush on her a little, but it was the sort of thing that teaches you what you like in a person without meaning anything more than that. She and her wife loaned me a pile of lesbian books to read, taught me to cook, and helped me learn to drive. They were like family. 

My grandmother’s friends, who I’ve known all my life, are also my friends. One of them is in the last year of her life now, and as sad as I am to lose her, I’m so grateful to have known her, to have been friends with her as close as she and my grandmother were. I’m also grateful my grandmother and I can share this grief and joy.

It’s possible to theoretically have power over someone and not abuse it. It’s possible to love someone, to be vulnerable with someone, and not be hurt.

Unlawful assembly has officially been declared at the protest at the precinct on Humboldt in Brooklyn Center, MN, over the murder of Daunte Wright. A dispersal order has been issued to the crowd. Armored trucks with SWAT have arrived at the precinct on Humboldt. Protests will be going all night, and the way it's looking right now, they will be escalated by the police into violence. I don't care if Tom Holland is involved or not, Dissociative Identity Disorder (otherwise known as Multiple Personality Disorder, although that's an old diagnosis that doesn't even exist anymore) is a highly stigmitised mental disorder that is heavily linked to trauma, and media villianising the disorder is extremely harmful for systems everywhere. Read and spread this. Systems have to deal with so much ableism because singlets like to portray us as evil and use us for entertainment although we’re real people. We are not harming others, we are much more likely to be harmed by ableist fucks, the ignorance created by media like this and a lack of education. There are no “evil” alters that are serial killers and commit crimes and violence. We went through severe childhood trauma and now have to deal with the consequences while constantly being stepped on and having to hide our existence from others.

Please educate yourself, help spread awareness and turn to actual systems if you’d like to learn more.

there is an on-going femicide in quebec, canada

and it’s not received the proper attention it deserves in the Canadian news, so I thought it would be good to make a post for ppl who aren’t Canadian as well to be informed and help the victims’ families, organisations and women’s shelters.

femicide is defined as the murder of women based primarily or solely on their gender. in almost all cases of femicide, the killer is a man close to the victim, most likely a romantic partner or family member. so far in 2021, there have been 8 murders in the Quebec area. the majority of these victims are Black and Indigenous women. all of them are victims of domestic abuse.

MARLY EDOUARD was a 32 year old Haitian musician, radio host and producer. on february 19th, she called 911 to report that she was receiving multiple violent death threats and met with police officers. less than 48 hours later, she was found murdered in front of her building. say her name.

REBEKAH HARRY was a 29 year old black woman and mother of one young boy under the age of 12. she was murdered by her boyfriend, Brandon McIntyre. in 2013, McIntyre was found guilty of domestic abuse towards his ex-wife. he beat Rebekah into a coma, and she died three days later on march 23rd. say her name.

KATALUK PANINGAYAK-NALUIYUK was a 43 year old Indigenous woman, mother of six and grandmother of two. she was murdered by her partner, Peter Ainalik, who took his own life afterwards. her sister, who has herself been in an abusive relationship for 19 years, confirmed that Kataluk’s been a victim of domestic abuse by Ainalik as well for many years.

NANCY ROY was a 44 year old woman. she was murdered on by her 53 year old ex-boyfriend, Jean-Yves Lajoie. Nancy’s mother told news and police that Nancy had been struggling for weeks to break up with Lajoie, who was possessive as well as physically and emotionally abusive. just days after she left him, Nancy was stabbed to death in her home by Lajoie.

NADÈGE JOLICOEUR was a 40 year old black woman and mother of five children. she was stabbed to death by her boyfriend, Enock Fenelon, in his taxi before he took his own life on march 19th. her family confirmed Nadège was a victim of domestic abuse which lead to her murder at the hands of Fenelon. say her name.

MYRIAM DALLAIRE (28) and her mother SYLVIE BISSON (60) were murdered on march 1st in their home by Myriam’s ex-boyfriend Benjamin Soudin. Myriam had left soudin after she accused him of domestic abuse.

ELISAPEE ANGMA was a 44 year old indigenous woman from Kuujjuaq and mother of four children. she was murdered by Thomassie Cain, her ex-partner, who had just been released from prison after abusing her then attacking her once more after she filed a restraining order against him.

Across Canada, 54% of the victim services surveyed reported an increase in the number of victims they served during the pandemic. Calls for domestic disturbances were also up 12% during the first few months of the pandemic. Keep in mind that the majority of victims of domestic abuse never call the police or speak up about their experiences in fear of their abusers.

I haven’t been able to find any gofundmes and donation links set up by the families of the victims. however, here are women’s shelters in Quebec and in Canada you can donate to and resources for women in Canada.

interrupting the bday celebrations to say st. vincent's volcano la soufriere on their largest island chain just erupted and the smoke rose to 10km in the air, and ash is falling heavily.

st. vincent is a very small island in the caribbean - much smaller than that of my own country and my country is like a dot on the world map - of only 100k+ citizens and at least 7,000 people were told to evacuate. this is the first eruption since 1979. st. vincent is a predominantly black country, and as of now i haven't seen any petitions as yet from the people. all i can do is hope that we can boost this and send them our love and support.

please pray for the caribbean folks. while this volcano is specifically affecting st vincent, st lucia (my island) and barbados are both on the look out for volcanic ash fallout, which isnt great during a pandemic, especially since our population will be under vaccinated for a while. i'm on the look out for any funds to help our neighbours to the south.
